She grabs her jacket, dashes out the front door and bounds down the front steps. He is there waiting for her. She stands next to him and he wraps his arm around her. He is taller, so his arm fits comfortably and casually around her shoulder. They stand there silently, smiling at each other. Her hair is golden and glowing in the afternoon sun. He gently pets her hair. Then all of the sudden someone kicks a soccer ball, and they both chase after it.
Watching them, I almost forgot that they are only three and four years old. They might as well have been fourteen and fifteen. From the window I see this type of interaction between them nearly everyday. They play soccer holding hands. They walk with their arms around each other. For them, I know it is completely innocent. They are neighbors, close friends. But for me, it marks the beginning of her life outside of our home. Her own relationships, apart from me.
And today I couldn't help but flash forward to the day Canon grabs her jacket, dashes out the front door, bounds down the front steps, and hops in his car.

Seems that the baby of the family always ends up being a wild child... so watch out for that little Miss Elly!
Cherish those girls and those moments. With all that's happened to me the past few weeks, I have a newfound appreciation for the amazing gifts we are privy to as mothers. Every moment in time, every new step in life, every milestone they reach is a gift that we should never overlook.
My love to you and those precious girls.
I've been avoiding posting something similiar to this one. A girl in Jacob's Kindergarten class called him on the phone one Saturday- I snapped a picture. And yes, I know he's just six and they are just good buddies but it made me think about what is to come- so not ready for that!
What amazing foreshadowing. I hope you are still writing this blog when Canon is 15 and grabs that coat. Because I'll be sure to remind you of this post.
I don't even want to think about the teenage years. Elly looks so much like Alex in those pics!
can you kiss that little girl for me?
Sorry... on the first comment it's me... Jenny.
