speaking of nyc

I recently stumbled upon this sketch. I had only been in New York a couple weeks when Alex drew this. At that time he was still leading me by hand, introducing me to all the things he had discovered the month he spent in the city before I arrived. And I followed his lead, wide-eyed and falling ever more in love with the city and with him. The night he drew this, we had spent a long Sunday playing and exploring. It was time for us to go our separate ways. Me, downtown. Him, uptown. We said our goodnights and then descended into the ground to await our trains. And there we were, staring at each other across the platform. We were too far apart to speak, but Alex opened up his sketch pad. My train came first and I waived goodbye.

I know it's simple and rough, but it's one of my very favorites.

awakening

This weekend we were in Georgia for a family event. When we are at the in-law's house, there is rarely time to head to Atlanta. This weekend we made time. I knew I needed it. Saturday morning Alex and I got up early, made sure the girls were squared away with Nana and Big Papa, and got a city fix.

We started off with breakfast at Java Jive. It had been nearly nine years since we were there last, but nothing had changed. Retro decor, an eclectic group of diners, and gingerbread waffles with homemade lemon curd. We reminisced about the meals we had shared there during our dating days.

It was still very early when we finished breakfast, so we took a car tour of all our favorite spots. So many memories, so many stories to retell, so much laughter, so much fun. Then we headed to the museum.

During my very first visit to Atlanta with him, we saw the Picasso exhibit at the High Museum. It was my sophomore year of college, and we had only been dating a few months. We flew to Atlanta, rented a car and spent the day in the city before heading to his parent's house. The High was our last stop before leaving Atlanta. We were the final group to be let into the museum before it closed. We walked through the museum hand in hand, gazing in awe at Picasso's artwork that hung just inches from our eyes. It was ridiculously romantic.

This weekend we made our way back to the High for the Annie Leibovitz exhibit. (I've been staring at my computer for quite a while trying to write something about our time there. I think I'm too emotionally attached to the experience to choose words to describe it right now. So, let me just say...it was incredible. I feel inspired and creatively recharged. My spirit is awake.)

We had an emotional and exciting conversation over lunch. It's time to think about moving.

Speaking of Alex...I think this is all I'm going to post tonight; I want to spend some time with him. It is Wednesday after all.

inside their heads

We had talked about it before, years ago. Even when we were dating, there was concern and anxiety about the mental health problems we could pass along to our children. His were the biggest concern. Mine also dangerous. My family history: SUICIDE. I read book after book looking for answers. I realized my life with him would be difficult, our relationship tumultuous. But I could not imagine being without him. I was too young and naive to truly factor children into our mad equation. Then she came into our lives. She shocked the chemicals of my brain into balance. And his heart led his mind to seek help. Drugs now keep his emotions in a flat line, but his creativity is hidden. We are able to function as a healthy, mentally sound family.

Last night we watched The Sopranos. Tony Soprano's college-aged son attempts suicide. Tony rescues him from the botched attempt and holds him as he sobs.

Tears streamed down my face. I knew he was emotional too. We stopped the show and talked. Thinking about our girls being mentally and emotionally unstable is heartbreaking. I can only hope my experiences and my understandings will help me guide them through their struggles.

"I doubt sometimes whether the quiet and unagitated life would have suited me - yet I sometimes long for it." - Byron

Here's another piece of Alex's artwork, from a more creative period in his life.

remembering art: part 2

Today I went through boxes looking for artwork to photograph. Now that Alex rarely draws, I find it very sad that his sketches are all hidden away. Here's another drawing he did of me.

remembering art

I've decided to start photographing some of Alex's artwork. Right now it is mostly crammed in closets and under beds. I just want to make sure it survives. And it's a shame no one gets to see it...until now.
