snowflake surprise

As I was packing last night, I walked past a window and saw beautiful, fluffy snowflakes falling from the sky. Usually in the South there are red flag alerts everywhere warning of potential snowfall, no matter how slight the chance. I guess I've been in my own world because this one took me completely by surprise. It was nice.

Watching the snow fall peacefully in the night reminded me of a time in New York. It had just started to snow when I left work and headed underground for a subway ride to my acting class. When I reemerged on 8th Avenue I found that the snow had fallen quickly. Everything was white. The grime and dirt of the city were hidden beneath a blanket of snow. And that part of the city was completely silent. No cars or cabs. Almost no people. No sounds except the crunching of fresh snow beneath my feet. Even then I realized this was my New York moment. The one special moment that will forever stand out in my memory. The time I felt like I was the only person in a peaceful and beautiful Manhattan winter wonderland.

i love that stillness of fresh snow too. the world pauses for just a little while, to take in the beauty and forget its problems. your post triggered a memory for me too: i remember lauren visiting me right after you had canon and describing the meaning of her name. how lovely that your little girl can look outside tonight and see a physical manifestation of her middle name.

I remember you telling me about that day when you and are were exploring NYC last year. It's hard to imagine Manhattan quieted by something so delicate as snow. I'm sure it was beautiful to all your senses.

Some of my *favorite* Chicago moments are when the city feels deserted. Whether it's during a snow storm. Or on my early morning walks with the dog. Or on holiday weekends when everyone leaves town. I feel like this place is my own urban playground.

I actually have a similar experience in the city. I was there for a short visit and I watched from my hotel window as the snow fell. The peace was unbelievable.
The sludge puddles the next day were unbelievable too! Anyone who saw my face upon stepping in it knew I wasn't from there.

what a beautiful moment!

i do love when snow is falling... it's just the days, weeks, and months where the snow just sits that i'm not so fond of.
