goodbye, love. goodbye, love.

After a dozen years on Broadway, Rent had its final curtain call tonight. The musical has meant so much to me, I feel it necessary to pay tribute. I find it really hard to put into words how I feel about this show, the music, the story, the characters. I'm sure anything I could come up with would seem melodramatic. So...I'll just simply state that I have a deep connection to this musical. It changed me.

Even though the show is still touring and I'm sure the Broadway revival will probably come around sooner rather than later, it still feels odd that Mark, Collins, Roger, Mimi, Maureen, Angel, Joanne and Benny won't be at home in the Nederlander theater anymore. As I've grown older my relationship with the show has changed, but it has always been comforting to know that they were all there every night reliving the story, singing the same familiar songs.

I have headphones on right now and I'm listening to Rent. And I'm crying. And I'm disappointed in my pitiful excuse for a tribute, so I'm just going to stop.

Measure your life in love.

I can't think of another musical that I love more than this one. I saw it in NY as well as when it came to Charlotte. I also saw the movie verison. I used some of the soundtrek to accompany a powerpoint/slideshow that I showed multiple places after my time in Peace Corps. The show touches me in so many ways that it is difficult to encompass in words. I am with you completely.

I went through a similar experience when Ben Folds Five broke up in 2000.

They are, however, planning a one-night reunion concert in September because 2/3rds of the Five (those of you who know the band can make the math work) have new releases that week.

The thing to keep in mind is that really popular art has a tendency to live on and take a weird course of evolution...like Jurassic Park dinosaurs

I loved this show. Funny enough, I saw it in London many years ago. Twisted to see a show about NY in London. Then again, I also saw Chicago in London. What's wrong with me?!

I loved your tribute. I love that you are so moved by this show.

I know how much you love this show and I wish I had something profound to say to make you feel better, but I don't. I'm just happy that I got to experience the show with you before it left Broadway.

My love to you.
