before you

In less than a week, Canon will celebrate her third birthday. I can barely remember what life was like before her.

Before you...I ran miles and miles.
Miles through the city, miles by the lake.
Talking, laughing, thinking.
Exploring the city on my feet.
My body was the strongest it had ever been.

Before you...smoke often filled my lungs
leading amazing and foreign thoughts in dance through my head.

Before you...we made love in the mornings.
And we fought uncontrollably.

Before you...the city was our home.
We were surrounded by diversity, art, culture, creativity.
We often immersed ourselves in the lights of the city's night
and then slept until noon.

Before you...I rarely drove a car.
I traveled by bus or train,
elbow to elbow with familiar strangers
watching city blocks pass us by.

Before you...we indulged in our whims.
Hours in movie theaters, walks around the city,
bike rides, live theater, festivals, train rides to nowhere,
middle of the night meals at 24-hour diners,
entire days spent on the couch or in bed.

Before you...I was self-absorbed and often depressed.
My job was unimportant.

And then there was you and my life changed.

It's why I live life without regrets. One day, life will change. And I want to feel I lived to that point with the fullest intent. Sounds like you did. And soon enough, you'll be able to begin sharing some of those life experiences with your girls! For now, enjoy and treasure where you are, because it too will change!

Ah...I know the "before you" feeling all too well. It does seem hard to remember life before our girls entered our lives like a tornado. It's an amazing time right now and completely different from before, but isn't it wonderful?!

Happy Birthday Canon!
