My mom graciously offered to babysit today so Alex and I could celebrate our five year wedding anniversary. (We weren't able to celebrate last month because of the stomach bug.) Her timing was perfect; Spiderman 3 came out this weekend. In our younger, pre-children years, we would have been at the midnight showing Thursday night, but at least we made it opening weekend.
Being in a movie theater reminds me of my life before I became a parent. Even the popcorn smell takes me back to younger years, snuggling next to Alex and being swept into another world. Now I'm older, my perspective has changed. It's difficult to watch a movie and not be completely aware of the process...the directing, the acting, the lighting, the casting. But still...it was fun.
The best part of the evening came as we were watching the credits. When the lights came up, I was shocked to see how many young children were in the theater. We were surrounded by children as young as age three or four. Even though Spiderman is make-believe, it has some serious violence. As the credits rolled, an older couple in one of the front rows were talking closely and kissing. A mother sitting next to us shouted meanly, "Get a room! There are kids in here." Alex and I looked at each other in disbelief. Two adults showing affection...totally inappropriate. Young man dying after being stabbed twice in the chest...perfect entertainment for young children. Unbelievable.

That's awesome. Andy is so jealous that he won't be able to see Spidey for a while. The "get a room" comment is unbelievable. What weird universe is that lady living in?
"Get a room" made me laugh, much in disbelief like yourself. Doesn't it make you wonder if you introduce any unintentional hypocracies like that to your children?
I went to see SM3 Friday. There was a couple with a little boy dressed like spiderman sitting next to us. Luckily the boy fell asleep before a rather nasty stabbing scene.
What the heck were they thinking?
I'm not a parent, but even I have better judgement than they do.
That's freakin' crazy! And sad.
while a little child watching something romantic or sexual may not soon forget what they saw, they most likely will not act out on this behavior (in harmful ways) for years to come. but little kids have no problem with violence. I remember watching the original Karate Kid on TV with a neighbor across the street. He was at least 8 years old. The next day i came over to his house, but he was grounded...because he had "crane" kicked a suitcase, which created a huge hole in the wall of his bedroom... it is crazy what people will let their kids witness
