the dress

Over the weekend I flipped through my mother-in-law's Lucky magazine. Since I hate to shop, I thought I would hate a shopping magazine. But it turns out the magazine is like having a personal shopper. They do all the work. So...all you have to do is sit in the comfort of your own home and look at all the cool things they found. And they found this dress. I LOVE this dress. I immediately envisioned myself wearing the dress over a pair of jeans. Since I was already in love with the garment, I looked to see where I could purchase one of my very own. It turns out this dress is made my Marc Jacobs and carries a $1,200 price tag.

If my grandmother were still alive, this would not be a problem. I know she would make the dress for me. We would make a trip to Mary Jo's. There...we would find a Butterick pattern similar to my beloved dress for her to go by. Picking out the fabric would be a bit of a challenge; she would have many suggestions to improve upon Mr. Jacobs's design. But I know I could convince her to stay true to the dress in the picture and in the end...I would have this dress.

Most of my childhood clothes were handmade. My grandmother spent endless hours sewing for me. I took it for granted. And though I will never have the Jeanne Early version of a Marc Jacobs dress, I still have many Jeanne Early originals. This Easter my girls will be wearing them. I can't wait to tell them about the woman who lovingly placed every stitch.

Ah... Mary Jo's... Wes loathes that place. He was tortured there once when my mom and I went to find fabric to recover some chairs. After 4 hours, I finally picked something... Wes has never gotten over it. Really.

That's my grandmother Wood you wrote about - she used to sew my clothes as a child, too! I miss her too. If you remember I tried to make a dress once - you even modeled it for me. What a disaster! How did our grandmothers make it look so easy?

By the way, Jenny - Andy refuses to set foot in Mary Jo's. I however, love it!
